چکیده

When a monochromatic electromagnetic plane wave is incident on an infinitely extending surface with the translation invariance property, a curious phenomenon often takes place at a low grazing angle of incidence, at which the total wave field vanishes and a dark shadow appears. This paper looks for physical and mathematical reasons why such a shadow occurs. Three cases are considered: wave reflection by a flat interface between two media, diffraction by a periodic surface, and scattering from a homogeneous random surface. Then, it is found that, when a translation invariant surface does not support guided waves (eigen functions) propagating with real propagation constants, such the shadow always takes place, because the primary excitation disappears at a low grazing angle of incidence. At the same time, a shadow form of solution is proposed. Further, several open problems are given for future works. key words: reflection, diffraction by periodic surface, scattering by random surface, shadow theory. reciprocity, guided wave

Shadow Theory of Diffraction Grating

This paper deals with a new formulation for the diffraction of a plane wave by a periodic grating. As a simple example, the diffraction of a transverse magnetic wave by a perfectly conductive periodic array of rectangular grooves is discussed. On the basis of a shadow hypothesis such that no diffraction takes place and only the reflection occurs with the reflection coefficient −1 at a low grazi...

Multiple scattering in grazing-incidence X-ray diffraction: impact on lattice-constant determination in thin films.

Dynamical scattering effects are observed in grazing-incidence X-ray diffraction experiments using an organic thin film of 2,2':6',2''-ternaphthalene grown on oxidized silicon as substrate. Here, a splitting of all Bragg peaks in the out-of-plane direction (z-direction) has been observed, the magnitude of which depends both on the incidence angle of the primary beam and the out-of-plane angle o...

Dynamical x-ray diffraction of multilayers and superlattices: Recursion matrix extension to grazing angles

A generalized dynamical theory has been developed that extends previous models of x-ray diffraction from crystals and multilayers with vertical strains to the cases of grazing incidence and/or exit below the critical angle for total specular reflection. This provides a common description for extremely asymmetric diffraction, surface ~‘‘grazing-incidence’’!, and grazing Bragg-Laue diffraction, t...

Compact 3D Profilometer with Grazing Incidence Diffraction Optics

A new type of diffraction range finder is disclosed that places the primary grating at an angle of grazing incidence relative to the receiver. The new design offers improvements over earlier prototypes in reduced package size, reduced chirp depth and a highly anamorphic behavior that provides a high profile to depth ratio. Demonstrations with transmission and reflection types of diffraction gra...

Quantum reflection of helium atom beams from a microstructured grating

We observe high-resolution diffraction patterns of a thermal-energy helium-atom beam reflected from a microstructured surface grating at grazing incidence. The grating consists of 10-μm-wide Cr strips patterned on a quartz substrate and has a periodicity of 20 μm. Fully-resolved diffraction peaks up to the 7 order are observed at grazing angles up to 20 mrad. With changes in de Broglie waveleng...
